The Healing Strength of the Postpartum Sitz Bath

Diaper Rash Salve

SalveThis salve is made for your baby’s sensitive skin. This lightly scented product contains pure, organic ingredients that are safer for your baby than synthetic products containing ingredients you usually can’t pronounce. If your little one’s delicate bum does happen to break out it should be applied twice daily. For more extreme cases, use it every time you change your baby’s diaper.

Sore Muscle Salve

SalveWhat a perfect salve after a day of strenuous physical activity. As you rub and massage it in, you can feel your muscles relaxing. I keep a jar of this salve in my bathroom and apply on sore muscles after I bathe, especially after a grueling day. It can also be used to heal joint and ligament pain and lower inflammation throughout the body.

Nettles (Urtica dioica)

NettlesMade as a pregnancy tonic, but it nourishes the whole system.

  • nourish the mother and fetus
  • high in assimilable iron, calcium, and chlorophyll making it an excellent nutritional supplement and tonic for the hormonal system
  • diminished muscle pain during and after birth
  • increasing the richness and healthy supply of breast milk

Motherwort Tincture (Leonurus cardiaca)

  • its nervine properties find benefit in PMS and some menopausal symptoms

Valerian Tincture (Valeriana officianalis)

Valerian
  • acts as a nerve tonic for irritations, hysteria, restlessness, and emotional stress
  • good for pain and menses cramps
  • aids in sleep

Lemonbalm Tincture (Melissa officianalis)

Lemonbalm
  • lowers stress response and acts as a mood elevator in depressive states
  • general mild sedative
  • has antiviral effects in herpes, reducing the pain and shortening the outbreak
  • used to treat menstrual cramps and headaches, healing wounds, easing digestion, preventing insomnia, and relaxing the nerves
  • good for children’s coughs and colds with its antibacterial, antiviral, and mucus-reducing properties
  • used topically, it relieves swelling, bruises, bites, and cold sores
  • NOT for use in pregnancy, but great for postpartum depression

Feverfew Tincture (Chrysanthemum luteum)

  • used for treatment in migraines
  • helps arthritis in acute inflammatory stages

Yarrow Tincture (Achillea lanulosa)

Yarrow
  • useful in colds, influenza, fevers, and respiratory infections
  • used for dyspepsia and suppressed menses
  • will stop internal bleeding; coughing and spitting blood
  • astringent and antibacterial effect
  • poultices or ointments relieve pain and heals cracked nipples
  • NOT for use in pregnancy

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) “knitbone”

Comfrey
  • useful to heal broken bones, sprains, damaged tendons and cartilage
  • helpful in arthritis, stomach problems, ulcerated tonsils, abscesses, and wounds
  • good for anemia and diarrhea
  • excellent mouthwash for bleeding gums
  • NOT for use in pregnancy
  • used as an ingredient in my salves

Arnica (Arnica cordifolia)

Arnica
  • used as a liniment for joint inflammation, sprains, and sore muscles to decrease swelling and bruising
  • homeopathic can be taken internally; otherwise used for topical applications
  • helps with neuromuscular tone as in arthritis
  • used as an ingredient in my salves

Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

Calendula
  • decreases the scaring process and promotes healing
  • used for pus filled infections and ulceration as a topical application
  • with glycerine as a douche, it may be used for vaginitis, cervitis, and non-specific discharges
  • used as an ingredient in my salves

Plantain (Plantago major)

Plantain
  • high in chlorophyll
  • excellent wound healer, for abrasions, rashes, and insect bites
  • internally, it is healing to GI tract inflammations from stomach ulcers to dysentery and septicemic conditions of the blood
  • said to be specific for thrush
  • used as an ingredient in my salves

Red Clover (Trifolium pratense)

Red Clover
  • the single most useful herb for fertility
  • helps restore and balance hormonal functions
  • high mineral, vitamin, and protien content aids the entire body
  • mild sedative effects on children
  • a good maintenance and nutritive herb in hepatitis or any chronic disease state
  • used as an ingredient in my salves
